What is a Deck Box?

A deck box or a junction box is a durable, weatherproof enclosure used in solar panel installation. It is designed to house and protect electrical connections and components from the elements. The boxes are installed on every roof plane with solar panels using bolts and geocel to prevent water inflow.

Purpose of a Deck Box

The primary purpose of a deck box is to securely contain and protect vital electrical connections, such as the wiring and conduit junctions, of a solar system. Protection from rain, snow, and wind is crucial to maintain the integrity and longevity of the system.

Physical Description & Materials

Deck boxes are typically made of high-quality, UV resistant plastic, which allows them to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. They come in various sizes and shapes but generally feature a removable lid for easy access to the internal components and a wide flashing perimeter ensuring watertight installation.

Deck Box Installation

The deck box is mounted directly to the roof. It is secured with bolts and sealed around the edges with Geocel to prevent water inflow. When properly applied, Geocel creates a watertight barrier that protects the electrical connections inside.

Wiring & Connection to System

A small hole is drilled through the roof aligning with the pre-drilled holes of the deck box. Conduit and wires from inside the home enter the deck box through these holes and are connected with the solar panel strings. This setup ensures all electrical connections are centralized allowing for optimal system efficiency and ease of wire management.
