What is Energy Storage?

Energy storage is the ability to capture and store energy for later use. Batteries are a common storage technology to pair with solar panels or other renewable energy sources.

Energy storage is extremely valuable with solar systems that produce more than a home is consuming at any given time. This is typical during the work or school day when no one is home. In contrast, batteries can be helpful in times of high consumption when production is low. At nighttime when production is zero, your home can make use of the stored energy before pulling from the grid.

In more dire times, during power outages, homes equipped with solar and a battery storage system can still produce and consume power as usual. This is the only case where it’s possible to do so. A lack of batteries in this scenario would not allow for the energy to be stored and therefore, the grid outage would prevent your home from producing energy.

Energy Storage System Guidelines

There are strict guidelines that energy storage systems must abide by to ensure safety and proper use.
