What is a Photovoltaic System?

A photovoltaic (PV) system also known as a solar system, converts sunlight into electricity. These systems utilize photovoltaic cells, commonly known as solar cells, to capture and convert sunlight and turn it into direct current (DC) electrical energy.

The system produces when sunlight enters the cells of a solar panel. The panels are connected and arranged into larger arrays and create and electricity flow that travels into the system’s inverter.

From there, the inverter converts the DC electricity into an alternating current (AC) so that it can be used to power most household and commercial electrical devices.

Photovoltaic Systems and Renewable Energy

Solar systems are one of the most accessible and efficient renewable energy generators. The solar industry has consistently grown since it became a feasible and popular electricity option for homeowners.

Solar systems are utilized in various forms for varying purposes. This includes ground-mounts, rooftop systems, community solar farms, and commercial systems.

Ground-Mount Photovoltaic Systems

Ground-mount systems are detached structures from the home or building. Oftentimes, they can be optimally angled to maximize sun exposure, making them one of the most efficient kinds of solar systems.

Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems

Rooftop systems are mounted to the roof of a home or building. They must follow the roof’s layout which may or may not be optimally positioned.

Community Solar Farm Programs

Community solar programs are large scale solar systems spread across a landsite. These systems generate “public” energy that can essentially be purchased by residents or businesses. The energy is not sent directly to the buyer, instead it is fed into the local power grid. The buyers will receive credits on their electric bills equivalent to their share.

Solar farms are best for people who do not have the means to produce their own renewable energy but still want to reap the benefits of the technology.

Commercial Photovoltaic Systems

Commercial solar systems can be owned by small businesses or corporations. Whether they’re attached to the building itself or set on a remote site, the company is entitled to all of the energy produced by the system. The company can apply for renewable energy incentives and may even qualify for additional, commercial focus incentives.
